Weekly review: Week ending January 25, 2019

  • Kaizen
    • I worked on slowly updating Quantified Awesome to use more recent libraries.
    • I used some trigonometry to automate clicking based on clock position.
    • After some experimentation, we determined that popcorn was best popped in a bag (versus popping it in a container in the microwave or popping it in a pot on the stove).
  • Us
    • I talked to a nurse at the drop-in centre about independence and child development.
    • We made up this song: “There’s a booger in your nose, in your nose. There’s a booger in your nose, in your nose. There’s a booger in your nose. Leave it there because it’s gross. When it’s private, you can go and pick your nose.”
    • W- got a wireless access point for J-‘s room.
    • My mom asked me to look into the longevity of Duratrans in museum conditions.
    • I made honey soy tofu and a bunch of other vegetable side dishes.
  • Gross motor
    • A- insisted on going to the library before school. She walked lots of places.
    • Lots of running! A- liked running up and down the hall outside music class.
    • After swimming, A- wanted to spend some time playing in the playground, even though it was cold. She liked going down the slides.
    • A-‘s been working on walking farther. She walked from the dollar store to library, and she also walked home.
    • A- liked jumping up and down inside the swimming pool. She was also interested in floating and paddling with the help of the Puddle Jumpers.
  • Sensory
    • We pulled A- around in a sled just outside the house. It was fun.
    • I pulled A- in a sled up and down a small hill at the drop-in centre. She loved it.
  • Language
    • “I’m just sending a text to Lola.”
    • “It’s so nice and quiet here.”
    • A- was having a hard time unbuttoning her shirt. W- said, “Oh, buttons are frustrating.” A- said, “But I know I’ll live.”
    • A- started singing the counting song in Cantonese and Tagalog.
    • I was talking to A- about getting her own library card for her third birthday. I told her that we didn’t have space yet for a hundred books in the bookshelf downstairs. (Right now, we’re maxing out at 50 items.) She said, “Necessary.”
  • Music
    • A- actively participated in music class, and ran up to the teacher to give her a hug even before the teacher had finished singing the goodbye song.
  • Eating
    • A- ate so much popcorn that she didn’t have a big appetite for lunch.
    • I made mini meatloaves, which turned out to be much more convenient than meatballs.
    • Hainanese chicken rice: Added lemongrass. Yum! A- liked the chicken.
  • Social
    • A- was very interested in talking to the parent support worker at the drop-in centre, even moving her seat beside her at lunch. She played next to other kids while I asked other parents about preschool.
    • There was a pretend post office station at the drop-in centre. A- enjoyed writing letters, putting them in envelopes, sticking stamps on, and sending them to me. I also sent her a few letters. She wanted to send letters to Lola and W- too.
    • A- liked playing a game of hatching things. W- and J- hid different objects inside the pomelo peel, and A- opened up the pomelo peel to discover what was there.
    • A- was play-acting during dinner. She turned to W- and said, “Hi! I’m A- and this is Sacha. Nice to meet you!” She even gestured at me.
    • “What’s W-‘s middle name?” “Are you ready for this? It’s J*.” “Hmm.”
  • World
    • A- discovered the joys of sitting by the window and eating popcorn.
    • A- really wanted to go to the museum, so we headed home after music class to pick up my membership card and then headed back. She was interested in brushing sand off pretend dinosaur bones in the Discovery Gallery, and she also liked looking at the dinosaur skeletons. We checked out the Zuul exhibit, which was pretty cool.
