]]> Busy, busy week, even though Monday was a holiday. I helped out at Ladies Learning Code on Saturday, discovering along the way that being in the middle of a busy crowd of 120 people will wipe me out for the rest of the day and leave me slightly frazzled for the next three days. It’s a good event and I’m glad something like that exists, but I’ll probably find more introvert-friendly ways to help people learn. =) Work-wise, I clocked around 38 hours of billable, fairly intensive work doing training and coding. So yeah, I think I’ll slow the pace a little next week.

It’s been a good week for reviewing the past, too. I’ve been going through a spreadsheet of my old posts, rating the posts on a scale of 1 to 5 so that I can pick out the memories that were the most significant for me. It would be interesting to see that on some kind of timeline, with maybe some ways to filter. We’ll see! I’ve also scanned in three of my old paper notebooks, and it’s fun flipping through my notes and lists. I’ve been thinking about getting the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF700T for a light-weight way to review and create sketches, blog, and read. The iPad may have a better app ecosystem, but I still like the way Android apps build on each other. The TF700T’s supposed to come out in June, so I’m looking forward to that.

I’ve been biking to work almost every day, and I like it. So far, the weather’s been mostly cooperative, although I’ve been caught out in the rain once. I enjoy seeing the landscape change as we move into summer – there are so many different kinds of green! Life is good.

]]> One-month anniversary of leaving employment and starting on my own. It was a good week, and I helped out a lot in terms of consulting. Milestone: First deposit into my account! This is great. The business is now in the black. If I manage my costs well, this will reduce the risk of other projects quite a bit.

I also managed to exercise enough self-control to spend some time on planning the visual book reviews and summaries aspect instead of getting wrapped up in all the useful things I could do with my current clients. I’m working on getting better at living in the moment, focusing on what’s at hand. This is easy to do when consulting – clear tasks, great progress. I need to get better at pulling my mind away from that and focusing on, say, learning more about drawing or looking for ways to get started with business. I’m like that: if I’ve got a presentation or a programming project, it rattles around in my brain even during the “off” moments. The better I get at mentally wrapping things up and resuming them later, the better I’ll be able to handle more complex challenges. Ideas still sneak in, but that’s okay – I’ve got a good capture system (pen! paper! phone!).

Next week, I’m planning to spend Monday to Wednesday focused on learning skills, adding to my site, and experimenting with ideas. That will help. I’ll try drawing and planning at home.

I’m also tempted by the idea of hanging out in the Art Gallery of Ontario, surrounded by all those colourful canvases. Maybe I’ll go on Wednesday evenings when admission is free, and see if I build enough of it into my schedule that a membership becomes worthwhile. I want to draw with more colour, and part of that means getting more used to it.

I also want to get back into the swing of writing more. There’s something odd about the timing of my evenings – it’s not quite as smooth as my usual writing routine. Maybe it’s just getting used to new rhythms of work. I’ll save up some posts over the next few days, and I’ll figure out new routines for writing and sharing.

]]> Third week of being on my own, and first week on this consulting engagement. I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I can help. It’s been fantastic. =) I like this, although I’m firm about my decision to spend time developing other ways to earn money.

W- and I spent Saturday evening watching YouTube clips of Victor Borge. He was totally awesome. If you’re into classical music, check him out. If you aren’t, check him out anyway.

I didn’t get as much done this week compared to last week, probably because I shifted my wake-up time two hours earlier and I needed to adjust. I slept around 5 hours less this week than last week: 57 hours compared to about 62 hours, but still a decent 8 hours a day. I worked 41.5 hours on consulting, and I spent a little time planning as well. I need to go back to doing my week-by-week analysis of where I spend time – it will be interesting to see patterns.

]]> Second week of being on my own! Pretty good, actually. I’ve started drawing book notes instead of just writing about the books I’ve read. I also organized my sketchnotes for Quantified Self Toronto, and I’ve put them up on http://quantifiedself.ca. I think there’s something promising here in organizing and drawing information, and I’d like to explore that further.

I’m starting with consulting next week. It’s probably going to be intense – two months, mostly-full-time – but I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share what I’ve been learning about adoption.

I finished my resolutions (including typing up that really long banking resolution from RBC), and I’m now an actual shareholder in my very own corporation. Looks like it’s all systems go!

]]> Monday was the Family Day holiday here in Ontario, so my real moment of reckoning was Tuesday morning. W- was about to drive to work for a meeting. I hit my spousal panic button and puppy-dog-eyed him into working from home so that I could get over my first-day-of-business anxieties. Several hugs and encouraging words later, both of us settled into our respective corners of the home office, and I tottered off on my business training wheels to see if I could make it past the fields of paperwork.

I knew it was going to be an intimidating week, and I’m so lucky that mentors shared their time and insights with me. On Monday, @mchua shared how she’s starting at consulting (helping organizations work with open source communities! awesome). On Tuesday, Eric Boyd told me how he went into product development and R&D. On Wednesday, I met clients for an engagement in enterprise social computing. On Thursday, @height8 taught me tons about structures and setting things up carefully. On Friday, @jvarmazis shared lots of tips about life, business, and creating value.

It’s amazing how generous people are, and I’m glad I’m getting to know so many wonderful people. =) I could really use the help, too. There are a lot of things that people have learned from experience and that no one will probably ever get around to writing down. (Not even me – too many knotty things in law and accounting.) Next best thing: get used to making imperfect decisions, ask lots of questions, and learn more along the way.

There’s still a little more paperwork to do. I’m going to pick up the post-incorporation kit of forms and certificate templates and whatnot, which will probably save me lots of time chasing different things down. I’m almost done with the contract paperwork for this consulting engagement, too.

I’ve started writing about The Shy Connector, and I’m looking forward to spending more time on that next week. I’m also pleasantly surprised at how much I learned about enterprise collaboration when I helped IBMers and our clients. We’ll see where that takes us.

Ooh, another good thing that I’ve noticed during this week of entrepreneurship: I exercise more! Way more biking, way more walking. That might just be the mild winter talking, but I think that flexibility of time might pay off well in terms of health.

]]> Work is settling down nicely. Regan is learning about Views and the other modules we use for project T. We’ve been adding comments to the code and removing things that were no longer necessary. There are still some things that need to be sorted out with timing and paperwork, but I think the team will be just fine without me.

So now I’m reviewing my blog posts from the past few years, and writing the stories while they’re fresh in my mind. It’s great coming across these memories, remembering what it was like to be new to everything, and to find these unexpected opportunities to learn and to help and to play.

]]> Two weeks to go before I leave IBM. My current project is in user acceptance testing, and I’ve addressed practically all the feedback that the client sent. The project manager is impressed at how quickly things get done. There’s nothing like a clear end date to sharpen one’s focus! I want to get as much in before I go.

We’re squeezing another project into my last ten business days. I’m going to help a developer learn Drupal and take over this project for a non-profit based in Toronto. It’s good work, and it would be great for her to pick up Drupal.

Braindumping about how to rock at IBM will probably have to wait until after I leave. Folks can take care of resharing the resources internally. I’ve got quite a few tips to share. =) It would be great to see the ongoing conversations, but oh well!

This week, W- and I volunteered for the students’ field trip to the Ontario Science Centre. That was quite informative. We also spent a lot of time helping J- with her homework, as she has a couple of assignments due this week.

Busy week, but a good one. Next week will be good too!

]]> I talked to my second-line manager (the manager of my manager) this week. It looks like all systems are go. Heading into my last three weeks at IBM! By golly.

This weekend was a busy one. I did a cooking sprint: beef stew, a stirfry with beef and cabbage, lots of cookies, two loaves of bread, and a pot of oatmeal. That should make our routines smoother for the rest of the week, giving us time to help J- with her homework.

I also worked on the bugs people have started identifying in Quantified Awesome. =) Sometimes the bugs are embarrassing, but I decided to squish my excuses and let people try things anyway. It’s fun tailoring systems to people again. I remember maintaining Planner Mode for a lively community of Emacs geeks, and I loved making all these little tweaks to help them live and work more awesomely. That was fun. It would be great to do something like that again.

Pretty good, actually! It was a little tight in the beginning, because I used last weekend to get some work done instead of tinkering with Quantified Awesome or focusing on chores. I used the time on Friday to focus on building and planning, and that was time well-spent.

Next week, I’m attending a couple of events, so I have less evening hacking time. I’m looking forward to being inspired by the events, and to more hacking and planning.
