Why you should do more research before reserving a spot in a hostel

In San Francisco, having narrowly escaped staying in a very very dodgy hostel. (And believe me, I've stayed in pretty dodgy hostels, but this one takes the cake!) I have no idea where I'm going to sleep, but I'm definitely not going to sleep there. After much assertiveness, have managed to get a refund.
