Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on the April 2026 Emacs Carnival theme of Newbies and Starter Kits. Check out that post to see all the entries people have shared so far. I enjoyed chatting with Prot about the topic, and he shared some defaults that even experienced users have been trying out. The carnival theme for May 2026 is "May I recommend…". Looking forward to reading your posts!

There was a big discussion on lobste.rs about people's favourite Emacs packages and that sparked similar conversations on Reddit and HN. Discussions like that are a great source of inspiration. I added a couple of small improvements to my config based on this week's Emacs news, like diff-hl.

Also, lots of people expressed their appreciation for Chris Wellons, who is moving on to other editors for now. Me, I've enjoyed using simple-httpd, impatient, and skewer, and I'm glad Chris made and shared them. Many of his packages already have new maintainers, and the rest are up for adoption. Perhaps we'll see him around again someday!

I enjoyed reading Hot-wiring the Lisp machine (an adventure into modifying Org publishing). I'm also looking forward to debugging my Emacs Lisp better with timestamped debug messages and ert-play-keys. I hope you also find lots of things you like in the links below!

Lots of little improvements in this one! I'm looking forward to borrowing the config tweaks that bbatsov highlighted and also trying out popterm for quick-access shells. Also, the Emacs Carnival for April has a temporary home at Newbies/starter kits - feel free to write and share your thoughts!

There's a lot of buzz around the remote code execution thing that involves Git, but it seems to be more of a Git issue than an Emacs one. This might be a workaround if you want, and in the meantime, don't check out git repositories you don't trust. There's no page for the Emacs Carnival for April yet, but you can start thinking about the theme of "newbies/starter kits" already, and I'm sure Cena or someone will round things up afterwards. Enjoy!

It's not too late to write about mistakes and misconceptions as part of the Emacs Carnival for March and not too early to think about the theme of "Newbies/Starter Kits" which Cena will be hosting for April. Who knows, maybe those ideas can become part of the newcomers presets. It could be fun to explore something like notes for Emacs beginners and see where you end up.

Also, I'm looking forward to seeing if these tips for reloading Emacs Lisp code can help me avoid little bugs from leftover code.

Enjoy!

: Removed elecxzy comment-dwim, whoops.

Might be a good opportunity to set up better auto-saves, with buffer-guardian.el inspiring an update to super-save 0.5. Also, there were a couple of interesting experiments embedding Chromium (Reddit) or native macOS views in Emacs (Reddit), and one about embedding Emacs in a webpage (Reddit).
